Divorce is never easy, especially when children are involved. Parents must learn how to co-parent, and prioritize the best interests of the child
Florida no longer uses the term “custody.” Rather, it is now referred to as “Co-Parenting,” assuming that both parents work together for the benefit of the child, even after divorce. There are two components of Co-Parenting: Parental Responsibility refers to the decision-making authority over issues such as education, religion and healthcare. While Timesharing refers to the schedule dictating how much time the child spends overnight with each parent. Both are worked out at the time of the divorce.
There are certain rules to follow to achieve a successful co-parenting plan and ensure that your child thrives despite the divorce.
- Focus on the best interests of the child above anything else – children benefit from having both parents involved in their life. Prioritize their needs rather than your own.
- Communicate effectively – Keep conversations in a neutral tone to avoid conflict.
- Follow the timesharing schedule – Stick to the schedule and plan holiday schedules in advance.
- Be flexible – Life sometimes gets in the way and schedules need to be changed. Be willing to adjust as long as it doesn’t harm your child’s routine.
- Avoid speaking negatively about the other parent – children shouldn’t have to take sides. Encourage a positive relationship between your child and the other parent.
- Handle transitions smoothly – keep drop off and pick up short and positive. Avoid arguments in the presence of the child
- Respect the other parent’s parenting style – Unless your ex’s parenting style is harmful to your child, respect their parenting style. Differences in meal choices, bedtimes and discipline issues are common, but they should be respected as long as the child is safe and well-cared for.
